“Strip Library”,
designed by Pini Leibovich in 2000, manufactured by Pini Leibovich Studio, Tel Aviv, bent laminated wood, metal, height 192 cm, length 177 cm, depth 40 cm. (DR)
With a certificate. One-off piece for “The work on the strip exhibition”. The “strip” objects were created to maintain the free quality of sketches. “The work on the strip exhibition” says Leibovich, “gave me the freedom to work from a sketch, from a quote, or from the material itself and let things come out in their spontaneous nature.” Another contrast that inspires Leibovich is the difference between the perfection promised by technology and the imperfections that are inherent in nature. His most successful exploration of these contrasts can be found in his “strip works”. Made from a group of plywood strips connected at various points that are chosen by the designer, each piece of furniture is unique. Leibovich selects where the points will be, and controls the tension and pressure that is applied to the wood strips, but ultimately the appearance of each object depends on the individual properties of the pieces used to built them and on the pliancy or rigidity that the wood demonstrates when it is free in the interstices between the loci. (Michael Porciello).
Exhibited in: Pini Leibovich, “Strip”, Periscope Gallery, Tel Aviv 2002 - Felissimo Gallery, New York 2001 (group exhibition).
